Character Development

Character Development Programs

The arts develop character in so many critical ways that it is hard to pick just one. One way that live performance influences the lives of young people is by bringing before them people engaged in a process of mastery. Sit through any question and answer session at the end of a Young Audiences performance and one question invariably is asked: How long have your been performing (dancing, acting, singing, playing your instrument)? The most common answer from our performers is usually since high school, middle school, grade school and sometimes even younger.

You can see the dream begin in the eyes of some children in that moment. You can see a seed being planted, which if watered by imagination, nurtured by encouragement, and fostered by opportunity, might inspire the performing artist of tomorrow. At Young Audiences, we are about more than building the audiences of tomorrow. Out of our "young audiences" will come the artists of tomorrow.

Storytelling

HeartTales:The Wisdom of the Four Bones

Kelly Leigh

The best stories teach important lessons about values and about living life. Kelly Leigh's stories, gathered from her travels around the world, follow the tradition of the “Four Bones” to which we must all remain connected: the Wish Bone, the Funny Bone, the Back Bone, and the Hollow Bone. Wish Bone stories remind us to pay attention to what has heart and meaning. Funny Bone stories remind us to not take ourselves too seriously. Back Bone stories are about the courage to stand up for what we believe in while at the same time, honoring the beliefs and values of others. Hollow Bone stories remind us to listen to the voice that guides us to do what is right, not just for ourselves, but for everyone.
