BETWEEN THE LIONS® Reading Readiness Residencies

The BETWEEN THE LIONS® Literacy Residencies utilize video clips from the award winning PBS series BETWEEN THE LIONS® and feature 1 to 2 YAV teaching artists. We ask that a teacher par¬ticipate as an active helper in the process. The teaching artist will have specific roles for the teacher to play in the process. All supplies and materials are included.

Kindergarten: What’s in a Name?

This five session A4L Residency is led by a Young Audiences musical artist. The program guides Kindergarten students in using musical techniques such as tapping rhythms and vocalizing to reinforce literacy concepts and skills.

Session Length: 35 minutes
Number of Sessions: 5
Capacity: 25 Students

Learning Outcomes—Students will:

  • Create and perform sound pieces based on rhythmic patterns in names;
  • Create and perform sound pieces using nonsense rhymes;
  • Perform sound pieces and songs in a group;
  • Learn and use key terms in the art form;
  • Apply literacy skills associated with segments from the BETWEEN THE LIONS® TV program

First Grade: The Long and Short of It!

This five session A4L Residency is led by a Young Audiences theatre artist with musical expertise and accompanied in three of the sessions by a Young Audiences dance artist. The program guides 1st grade students in creative movement and sound production related to vowel sounds and short action words.

Session Length: 45 minutes
Number of Sessions: 5
Capacity: 25 Students

Learning Outcomes—Students will:

  • Make creative choices in selecting vowel sounds and short words to be the basis of expressing ideas and presenting pieces in theater and dance;
  • Assign sounds and movements to the BETWEEN THE LIONS® episode entitled "Popcorn Popper" and perform for another class during the last session;
  • Learn and use key terms in the art form;
  • Apply literacy skills associated with segments from the BETWEEN THE LIONS® TV program.

Second Grade: Call It As You See It!

This five session A4L Residency is led by a Young Audiences musical artist with vocal expertise and accompanied in three of the sessions by a Young Audiences visual artist. The program guides 2nd grade students in sound production and the creation of visual arts pieces related to original poetry with blended words, synonyms and rhymes.

Session Length: 50 minutes
Number of Sessions: 5
Capacity: 25 Students

Learning Outcomes—Students will:

  • Make creative choices in directing the movement of pitches in music;
  • Blend sounds to form words created with paint stick puppets;
  • Learn and use key terms and techniques in music and the visual arts;
  • Write original poetry using blended words, synonyms and rhyming;
  • Assign sounds and movements to the words in a poem and perform for another class during the last session;
  • Participate in class discussions, and identify how creative decisions are made;
  • Apply literacy skills associated with segments from the BETWEEN THE LIONS® TV program.
