Outcome Based Arts Residency Programs

The traditional school day is expanding. As more and more schools are expanding their services from providing before and after-school care to re-imagining themselves as community centers of learning, the need for effective and engaging after-school programming is growing more critical. Young Audiences of Virginia has a long history of developing outstanding programs that allow students the opportunity to work with professional artists to explore and create their own projects in a wide range of disciplines.

An artist-in-residence program (or residency) is an in-depth arts immersion experience that may include both performance and workshop elements in support of teacher and student learning.

A residency may be thematic or it may look more like a series of master classes. The important thing to remember about a residency is that no two are alike. While we have provided a menu of Outcome-Based, After School Arts Residency Programs online, each residency is customized to meet the specific requirements of each site. Young Audiences will work with you in designing the academic and artistic scope of a residency to meet your needs. You can create your own or replicate one of the residencies we have successfully produced for another school or school system.

Our programs feature these elements:

• Real Skills
  Residencies involve students and teachers in a long-term arts experience. While they use the arts as a vehicle and do build art specific skills, most residencies actually focus on developing the kinds of life skills that make for success in the world of work. Skills such as self-discipline, self-evaluation, and self-confidence, coupled with creative problem solving, healthy expression, teamwork, and clear communication are just the kinds of skills for which employers are looking.


• Teacher Involvement
  The most successful residencies always involve active participation of both staff and students. Long-term student learning relies on the faculty’s involvement in planning and implementation. Teacher training is often a component of extended residencies.


• Pricing Structure
  Because each residency is custom built, it is impossible to have a set price. Price is determined by the number of hours and the number of staff required to successfully meet the goals of the residency. Administrative and supply costs are factored into the proposed budget. We are always happy to help you work within a set budget.


• Appropriate Grade Mix
  Successful residencies group grade levels developmentally. It is difficult to appropriately serve K-5 students at the same time with the same program. You will find appropriate grade level mixes listed beside each residency.


• Minimum Time/Staff Requirements
  Each residency requires a certain amount of time to reasonably achieve it’s goals. You will find these times listed beside each residency. To reach each student effectively, we strive to ensure the best possible teacher/student ratio. While we strive to be flexible, we have found these ratios best serve students.


• SOLs and Academic Correlation
  In the residency customization process, specific SOL content can be targeted. If you tell us what you need, we can ensure the best match between SOL targets and the residency goals.
